Today, we begin a two-session first look at Confucianism - although your only reading is a brief one that will provide some evidence about the nature and understanding of li in early China, I will be laying down foundations for our discussion of Confucianism next meeting. In addition to discussion of the ritual texts that constitute the online reading, class will include a lecture segment on the background of Confucius and his school.

Your reading assignment for Class #9 is somewhat longer and more diverse than usual. The short reading for today should allow you to get an early start on that assignment.
