Class #25

Zhuangzi: Death and Oneness in the Dao

Reading:  Zhuangzi, pp. 40-51

Lecture PowerPoint Deck

Your readings for Wednesday include Chapters 6 and 7 of the Zhuangzi Inner Chapters, "The Prime Master" and "In Response to High Kings." Here, the theme turns away from the social world. In Chapter 6, the three sections we will focus on, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, all treat the theme of death, which really forms the endpoint of the thematic sequence that starts with the issue of relativity (of time, size, knowledge) in Chapter 1. Chapter 7 seems to be a brief miscellany, and no single theme emerges. We will, however, look closely at 7.5 and at the final section, 7.7. If the Inner Chapters at one time constituted an independent book in some way, then we would want to pay as close attention to the end of the book - as the "last word" - as we did to the opening.
